Mr. Hajaru Barik about 63 years of age is an old and energetic man lives in the village Bardol of Bardol GP under Bargarh District of Odisha. He has a small family with one son.  When Mr Hajaru Barik was in 7th class he started helping his father for agricultural work. Gradually he stopped his study. Since he belonged to a poor family, he was working every day in farm with his father.

In the year of 1984 he got married to Ms. Belmati Barik. After his father’s death in the year of 1991, he had taken responsibility of his family. Out of his 4 acres of Land, 2 acres of land he had given out on lease for Paddy cultivation and remaining 2 acres of land he started cultivating vegetables in his farm with using of all types of Pesticides and fertilizers.

At the age of 45 years, he got heart disease then he sold ½ acres of land. He had an expenses of Rs. 15 lakh to recover from the disease.  After that as like before, he continued to cultivate in his farm. After recovery from cancer, he was trying to adopt organic farming.

In the year 2015, Sarva Seva Samiti Sanstha (SSSS) started a project in the name of LEISA with the support of Bargarh Cement Works (ACC Trust). Technical support for this project was given by BASIX Krishi Samruddhi Ltd. One day SSSS Volunteers organized a village meeting in Bordol Village. Mr. Hajaru Barik attended the meeting and he impressed on the discussions during the meeting and became enthusiastic to get knowledge about organic farming and Non Pesticide Management (NPM). Before he had planned to do organic farming but due to lack of supports and technical knowledge, he couldn’t start.  He already realized due to heavy uses of chemical pesticides, the number of cancer cases is increasing in Bargarh. He wanted to practice different methodologies on organic farming in his field. So he made his registration by paying Rs. 500/- under NPM (Non Pesticide Management) for all types of Vegetables cultivation.  He always got in contact with SSSS staffs like LSP (Livelihood Service Provider) and SMS (Subject matter Specialist).  Under their supervision, he started cultivating using organic manure with using of Bio Fertilizer and Bio pesticide like Soil Charger, Puspika, Sabujima, Jal ki Dhal, Phasal ki Dhal provided by SSSS. These products were developed with technical support from BASIX Krishi Samruddhi Ltd.

He also did crop planning of his land and has learnt how can he do cultivate throughout the year and produce all types of vegetables. Out of his 1.5 acres of land, he plann ed to cultivate Pointed gourd (Potola) in 0.40 acres (Throughout the year), Pumpkin 0.80 acres (June to Oct), Beans 0.40 acres (Nov to March), Tomato 0.40 acres and remaining 0.30 acre under Chilly, Brinjal, Cauliflower etc.

After he cultivated in the organic way he found that there is a very good result by using the Soil charger, Puspika, Sabujima, Jad ki Dhal and Phaasal ki Dhal on increasing yield.

Sl No Name of the Crop Area under Cultivation Total Expenditure (Rs.) Yield Price/ton (Rs.) Revenue (Rs.) Profit (Rs.)
1 Pointed Gourd 0.40 Acres 50,000/- 9.6 ton 20,000/- 1,92,000/- 1,42,000/-
2 Pumpkin 0.80 Acres 25,000/- 16 ton 8,000/- 1,28,000/- 1,03,000/-
3 Beans 0.40 Acres 10,000/- 2 ton 25,000/ 50,000/- 40,000/-
4 Tomato 0.40 Acres 8000/- 1.6ton 20,000/- 32,000/- 24,000/-
Total 93,000/- 4,02,000/- 3,09,000

Now Mr. Hajaru Barik is getting profit of Rs. 3.09 Lakh per year and his average monthly income is Rs. 29,000/- to Rs. 35,000/- with vegetable cultivation. He is a role model farmer encouraging many farmers to adopt organic farming. Many farmers are also following him and they have started doing organic farming. He also suggested everyone to do organic farming with all possible support.
